Project

We looked into our community and the Cooum River that runs along has been contaminated for years now and it has been affecting the people in multiple different ways. We expressed these concerns through art and used the design thinking process to come up with solutions.

Problem Statement
Students have been disposing of huge amounts of single-use plastic and paper waste in the school. The waste is not separated and ends up being thrown out with bio-degradable waste, leaving no scope for recycling or reusing.
Solution Statement
To bring a mindset shift in students to think through the 5Rs of waste management.

For students to become impact leaders and bring about a mindset shift in people of their community.

Students come up with a solution to restore the Cooum River in their community.

Process

We started by collecting and separating the waste every day to get an idea of the amount of waste generated in the classrooms.

We watched documentaries, read the newspapers, and had discussions to understand the current reality and how our actions affect it.

Students made models using the segregated plastic and the information collected.
(This is a model of the turtle they saw in the video)

We made a Christmas tree out of the bottles collected and a few students sold the bottles to a scrap dealer. One of them suggested we buy food for the needy with the money collected.

We also recognized organizations that have come up with innovative ideas and collaborated with them to widen our knowledge.
